First Thursday is a popular monthly event that takes place along South Congress Avenue, generally from Barton Springs Road to Elizabeth Street. It is basically like one big block party, and it is perfect for all ages. On the first Thursday of each month, all of the stores along South Congress that normally close early stay open late (most stay open until 10 p.m., but some later). Some of the stores have special sales and give out free drinks on these nights. Some of the restaurants and bars have drink specials. SoCo Fundraiser to help fight Oak Wilt in Travis Heights

Greetings, All! As many of you may have noticed, the first (and less expensive) "L" of the oak wilt prevention trenching has been completed on Newning. We still need approximately $5,000 to finish the other portion of the trench. So, because we need money and because we'll have a great time . . .

Please come to Guero's Beer Garden on Tuesday evening, May 19, from 5:30 to 9:00. $10 admission (children under 12 free) will get you live performances by Matt the Electrician, Elizabeth Wills and Jon Dee Graham under one of the neighborhood's most beautiful oaks. Appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages are provided by Guero's, alcohol will be available for a modest sum and there will be a great Silent Auction with items showcasing our many talented neighbors. And --late-breaking development -- the incomparable Stuart Moulton of Austin Cabaret (and Green Mango Realty) will serve as emcee for this party. (I don't want to ruin the fun but I'll just tell you this gentleman is a first-rate Carol Channing impersonator!)

I hope you will join us to celebrate a successful closure to this battle of the oak wilt war. Thanks for all your support and generosity this spring!

Blue Santa: Purchase or drop off donations at 1st Thursday Festivities 12/6

South Congress rushes to the rescue to help Blue Santa! And you can beat the parking crunch in SoCo on First Thursday by parking at One Texas Center (Google Map), walking one block west to S. Congress Ave. and riding the FREE Orange 'Dillo which runs every 10 minutes from 6-11 pm, from the Hyatt along S. Congress to Live Oak and back!

The annual Blue Santa community-wide effort to collect donations of toys for Austin's children experienced an unusual shortfall this year due to bad weather on the Chuy's parade day last weekend.

You can make a donation of a new toy or a contribution of money when you come to the First Thursday celebration on South Congress Ave. on December 6th. In fact, some merchants have toys for sale as well, making it an easy option for you to purchase and donate all in one visit!

Blue Santa has reported that they especially need toys for children ages 5-10, and footballs, basketballs and soccer balls.

All toys need to be delivered by Dec. 10th to the collection center, so the time is NOW to join the March of the Toys for Austin's families in need.

This year’s theme is Paso a Paso, which means “step by step.” The event will include tacos and margaritas, a raffle contest, live music, and face painting and crafts for the kids. In keeping with the theme, there will also be a salsa dancing lesson led by English at Work students!

Purchasing a ticket for $25 gets you into the party, a free dinner, and automatic entry into the raffle contest. Smaller prizes include gift baskets from area businesses. The grand prize is a trip for two to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico! You can purchase tickets online by going to the “Contribute” or by calling (512) 585-1600.
